Forest Folk School

Welcome to the Forest Folk School, located on Lighthouse Island along the scenic Allegheny River in Tionesta, PA. The Folk School seeks to bring together youth and community members of all ages with artisans (local and nationwide) to gain skills, values and knowledge from one another. These inter-generational learning experiences provide a unique and life-changing education, focusing on “bringing to life” the traditions of our ancestors.

The Forest Folk School launched its first workshop in August 2014; “Master Bowyer,” Tom Turgeon of Boise, Idaho provided instruction on building custom long bows.  In September, James (Sparky) Sparks from McGregor, Minnesota, offered a unique experience in building custom Kenosha Canoes.  We are lucky to have Sparky return each year to share his knowledge and talent in custom Kenosha Canoe Workshops.

An array of artists, skilled craftsmen, and talented individuals will be invited to present workshops, seminars, and training for all ages in a variety of interests.  Among the many topics to be offered are: fiber arts, wood carving, painting, leather-making, pottery, candle-making, photography, jewelry, stained glass, wood working, blacksmithing/tool making, building custom muzzle loaders, canjo building, music, outdoor skills, food preservation, basketry and more.

We extend a warm welcome to anyone interested in sharing in the Forest Folk School experience.  For more information about our workshops, see our “Workshops” page, follow us on Facebook, or contact us at 814-755-2422.
